Communism Is Not Dead!
©FOUNDATION Magazine, Jan-Feb 2000
Communism - a word that sparked feelings of dread,
fear and anger into the hearts and lives of millions of people throughout the majority of
the twentieth century. However, during the past decade, the word hardly even seemed to
surface in public dialogue. Since the collapse of the former Soviet Union, the Western
world has all but forgotten the dangers posed by such an oppressive political, religious
and economic system. We tend to live as though the rest of the world currently enjoys the
same freedoms we possess. But is communism really dead? The facts prove that it is still
alive and even thriving.
One only needs to ask the citizens of Taiwan,
Republic of China, whether or not they feel as though communism is dead. These inhabitants
of Free China must continually face the threat of their communist neighbor which refuses
to recognize their freedom and independence. One only needs to ask the citizens of North
Korea, Vietnam or mainland China. Honest men, women and children from these nations will
tell of the corruption that plagues their governments and the harsh physical and emotional
oppression they must endure. Millions of people are in bondage to communist governments
that deny the freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom of the press or the ability
of their citizens to defend and protect themselves from tyrannical rule.
We know that our brothers and sisters in the
Lord who live within these communist nations are suffering greatly for the cause of
Christ. Because they choose to obey God rather than men, they are often tortured,
imprisoned, fined and forced into labor camps. We believe it is our responsibility to
remember these dear believers before the Throne of Grace and engage in intercessory prayer
on their behalf. In order to provide a better understanding of their plight, we have
included two articles in this issue of Foundation which we hope will enlighten
believers in the Western worlds to the condition of the true church in communist lands,
specifically Communist China.
The first article, "The
Church in China," accurately summarizes the history of the church in China.
Although Pastor M.H. Reynolds, Jr., wrote this article 18 years ago, the truths found
therein are just as up-to-date as if they were written yesterday. The second article
titled "The True Church Still Suffers" offers a
current perspective of the religious persecution of Christians that has been documented by
a variety of sources, both Christian and secular.
We reject the claim that communism is dead, that it
is no longer a threat to Faith and Freedom, or that it is at least "changing for the
better." We must remember that while similar claims have been made throughout the
century concerning the state of believers in Russia, such claims were quickly exposed as
lies when Russia lifted its Iron Curtain. Pray for suffering believers throughout the
world. Warn of the dangers of atheistic communism. To do otherwise is to betray our true
brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering for His cause.
